Meet our 2016-2017 President
Message from our President
I am honored and privileged to serve as the Kiwanis Club of Marco Island’s President for the 2016-2017 year. I say that because having been a member of this organization for a number of years, I know the outstanding caliber, commitment to service, and overall goodness of its membership. Members of the local Kiwanis family take the work of serving children and the community seriously, as evidenced by the things we support.
These include: the Literacy Buddy Project of the Early Learning Coalition of SW Florida, the Terrific Kids program, Reading is Fundamental at two local elementary schools, support for local early learning and early child care programs, the needed expansion of library resources in selected elementary schools, and summer camp scholarships for children from needy families.
We also support active Key Clubs, the Kiwanis high school organization that introduces young people to the world of service, and offer scholarship potential to a few graduating seniors. Every child at a nearby elementary school with an enrollment of about 700 students and a better than 90% poverty rate gets a Christmas gift from local Kiwanians who are accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus on the very special distribution day. We also raise funds for Meals of Hope, an initiative that packages meals for families who need help providing food for their children when school is not in session.
There are many more projects that the Kiwanis Club of Marco Island supports - so many perhaps that even our membership may not be fully aware of them all. Sharing more information about all of these projects will be one of my goals this year.
Marco Island Kiwanis is also a member of the state, national, and international Kiwanis organizations. As a state-wide or Division project, among other initiatives, we participate in efforts to provide homeless children with what they need to get the new school year off to a good start
Kiwanis International has taken on huge initiatives such as eliminating neo-natal tetanus world-wide. And every Kiwanian should feel a great sense of pride that through our collective efforts, this enormous goal has just about been accomplished.
How do we do all this? Through hard work and significant fund raising at events like the Seafood Festival, done in collaboration with the two local Rotary Clubs, the Car Show, the Candy Cane Drive, perennial 50/50’s, and the Running for Reading Event, Kiwanis’ Family 5K, this year’s 4th Annual Stride Away Through Hideaway held on November 19, 2016. Community members are encouraged to participate in this, and more information is available at www.marcoislandkiwanis5k.com.
The Marco Island Kiwanians invite prospective members to join us in these opportunities to work on behalf of our children and our community as we look forward to yet another productive, fun-filled year.
